Here Is Why Diet Drinks Are No Good Either, Part 3
Part 1 – Part 2 - Part 3
Good morning Susannah,
In our last part of our series about diet drinks I want to talk about another ingredient that does not seem to be a good idea to put into our bodies: I am talking about potassium benzoate.
Potassium benzoate
This is a food preservative that inhibits the growth of mold, yeast and some bacteria. Acidic foods and beverages such as fruit juice, sparkling drinks, soft drinks, and pickles are preserved with potassium benzoate. It is approved for use in most countries including Canada, the U.S., and the EU, although it is not recommended for consumption by children. Potassium benzoate is also used as the whistle in many fireworks. How do you like that?
In combination with ascorbic acid (vitamin C), sodium and potassium benzoate may form benzene, a known carcinogen. Heat, light and shelf life affect the rate at which benzene is formed. One very common way to make potassium benzoate is by oxidizing toluene.
Toluene
Toluene, is a clear, water-insoluble liquid with the typical smell of paint thinners. It is widely used as an industrial feedstock and as a solvent. Toluene is able to dissolve paints, paint thinners, silicone sealants, many chemical reactants, rubber, printing ink, adhesives (glues), lacquers, leather tanners, and disinfectants.
Like other solvents, toluene is sometimes also used as an inhalant drug for its intoxicating properties; inhaling toluene can potentially cause severe neurological damage. Low to moderate levels can cause tiredness, confusion, weakness, drunken-type actions, memory loss, nausea, loss of appetite, and hearing and color vision loss. These symptoms usually disappear when exposure is stopped. Toluene can interfere with kidney function.
Toluene has also been used in the process of removing the cocaine from coca leaves in the production of Coca-Cola syrup.
Final Thoughts
As you can see, the “contributions” of diet sodas are “priceless”, so stop drinking that junk. I am sure when you go to the gas station you are mighty careful about the type of gas you put in your car, especially if you have a nice one.
Does your body deserve less tender and loving care than your car? I hope your answer is NO. Then, why do you want to feed your body with junk products and your car with good ones? After all, you can replace a car any time. Replacing your body will be a little harder. Thus, DRINK WATER and STOP DRINKING SODA.
To your health!
