Exercise Diabetes is a Powerful Therapy

Diabetes and exercise

Good morning Susannah,

As I have mentioned to you before, exercise diabetes is a powerful therapy. However, among the many people who come to my Nutrition Counseling or to attend my Nutrition Courses in Montebello, CA, only about five percent of them practice some kind of physical activity. It seems that after a diabetes diagnosis is made, they are advised by their doctors to lose weight and to avoid sugar but, I am afraid, not enough emphasis is being made on how much they can profit from being physically active.

Regular exercise is crucial
In fact, regular exercise is so crucial, that for people with pre-diabetes it can very well mean reversing the condition instead of moving into full-blown type 2 diabetes. And for those patients with diabetes type 2, as it is your case, regular exercise can mean the difference between having mild insulin resistance and being dependant on heavy medication.

In my last correspondence to you, I discussed how exercise lowers the level of sugar in the blood by stimulating the GLUT-4 transporters molecules inside the cell to come to the surface and usher glucose inside.

The many hats of regular exercise
Today I want to expand briefly on this very important concept because besides “calling” the GLUT-4 to come to the

surface of the cell, regular exercise can also increase the number of GLUT-4 transporters found inside the cell.

This means that the more GLUT-4 transporters are available, the more glucose molecules can enter the cells. In other words, more glucose inside the cells, less glucose outside the cells, and by outside the cells I mean the blood.

So, here you have it: regular exercise diabetes can remove the sugar in your blood, which is your main goal.

Let me know if you have already started some kind of physical activity.
